New Zealand Park Opens First Motorized Uphill Zipline

Adventure Park Insider—Christchurch, New Zealand, April 3, 2025— Christchurch Adventure Park opened “The Rush,” reportedly the world’s first motorized uphill zip line attraction. Developed in partnership with local engineering firm Holmes Solutions, the ride propels participants uphill at speeds reaching approximately 75 kph (47 mph).

Unlike traditional gravity-driven zip lines, The Rush uses Holmes Solutions’ proprietary Switchback technology, featuring motorized trolleys that navigate both uphill and downhill trajectories.

Engineer Dave Lewis described the technology as a “breakthrough innovation” for the adventure park industry. “We wanted to create a new rider experience, better than what is being offered in adventure parks and ski resorts around the world,” he said.

Anne Newman, general manager of Christchurch Adventure Park, noted that the ride’s seated design has fewer weight and height restrictions than traditional zip lines, making it suitable for a broader range of visitors, and its out-and-back format offers a shorter experience than a full zip line tour, but one that is still thrilling. “As it takes off, you really do get a bit of a head-rush hence the name,” she said.

Holmes Solutions said there are plans to implement similar rides in the United Kingdom, United States and other markets, reflecting global interest in the new technology. “It’s catching on quick on a global scale,” said Lewis.

The Rush is now open to the public at Christchurch Adventure Park.
