Canyon Ski Resort Opens New Aerial Park, Zip Lines

Adventure Park Insider—Red Deer, Alberta, July 18, 2024—Canyon Ski Resort opened a new aerial park, zip lines, and a net park this month to meet the demand for more activities to fill the day for guests, who already visit the resort to ride Alberta’s only alpine coaster and slide down western Canada’s longest summer tubing runs.

Eco-Trek Adventures installed a new three-level, hub-and-spoke aerial park with 36 elements. The 40-foot-tall structure also includes a three-route climbing wall and a free fall. Within the aerial park structure is a net park, where guests ages 3 and up can bounce around on trampoline nets and slide down a three-story spiral slide.

In addition to the aerial park and net park, a main adventure tower serves as the launching and end point for a pair of dual “out and back” zip lines. According to owners David and Robyn Martel, one set of parallel zip lines exits the main adventure tower and travel roughly 500 feet to an intermediate station where guests transfer onto the return parallel zips that terminate at the ground level of the adventure tower.

“We went with the dual zips to increase user capacity, and the ‘out and back’ for the ease of the customer to end at the same location and for the return of gear,” said the Martels.

The new installations allowed Canyon to offer a new “play all-day pass,” which includes access to the aerial course, net park, zip lines, alpine coaster, and summer tubing.

“We feel that these activities are unique to our region, and we want to offer something that is different from anything guests can experience in our area,” said the Martels. “In particular, the adventure park fits nicely into our geography and offers a great outdoor experience.”

The entire park will take 10 staff to operate on a busy day. While they’ll have a better understanding of it all in the coming months, the Martels said they expect a roughly five-year ROI.

This is the third straight year that Canyon has added new summer activities after installing the alpine coaster in 2022 and opening the summer tubing in 2023.
