Adventure Park Insider—Cañon City, Colo., July 17, 2025—The City of Cañon City has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the long-term lease to operate and enhance the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. The current lease with the Royal Gorge Company of Colorado (RGCC) is set to expire in October 2026.

The lease is a valuable commodity, as the park draws between 300,000 and 350,000 visitors a year. It offers more than 20 different activities and attractions. The namesake suspension bridge, built in 1929, is 18 feet wide and 1,260 feet long. It traverses the Gorge nearly 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River. Among the other attractions are a 2,200-foot-long single-span tram that also crosses the Gorge, a Sky Coaster, via ferrata, trail rides, and children’s amusement park.

In opening the bidding process, the city said it is seeking a qualified, experienced, and financially sound firm to partner in elevating the park’s guest experience. The proposed initial lease term is for ten years, with options to extend up to a 25-year term.

The RGCC has held the lease since 1947, and the city expects the company will bid to retain the lease. While the city has a “strong working relationship” with RGCC, city administrator Ryan Stevens said that “it makes sense to explore what options are available and to listen to proposals and new ideas on how the Royal Gorge Bridge can develop as an attraction.”

The RFP outlines key evaluation criteria, including experience and qualifications, finances, growth opportunities, management plan, and sustainability practices. A site visit for potential bidders is scheduled for July 24, with proposals due by Sept. 5.
