Aerial Adventure Academy, an offshoot of Outdoor Ventures, is offering Train the Trainer courses for adventure park staff April 5-9 at Outdoor Venture’s The Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium. The courses provide trainers with the resources, methods, and practical teaching experience to prepare park staff to become Level 1 or Level 2 monitors (aka guides). The Academy’s curriculum also includes advanced rescue techniques.
There are two courses, one for new attendees and a second “refresher” course for previous attendees.
The four-day Train the Trainer course, April 5-8, will focus on the soft skills needed to train employees at the different monitor levels and officially designate the M1 and M2 positions. This course is designed for qualified staff and supervisors who will be responsible for training employees at their facilities. Participants who pass all qualification requirements will be awarded an MT (Monitor Trainer) designation. Cost for the program is $960 per person.
The prerequisites for becoming a Monitor Trainer are:
- current certification in CPR and First Aid
- current certification as an M2, or equivalent high ropes course experience
- minimum of two years and 800 hours of professional experience as a certified M2, or equivalent high ropes course experience
- ability to train and assess staff at the M1 or M2 level
- being at least 21 years old
The Train the Trainer Refresher course, April 9, is intended for prior attendees whose Monitor Trainer certificate will soon expire. This one-day course serves as a review of the original course and further prepares trainers for their role. Cost is $240 per person.
Note that these courses do not teach equipment use; the Academy expects attendees to have strong existing knowledge of their parks’ equipment and facilities.
Course fees do not include lodging, travel, and meals, which are the responsibility of the attendees themselves. The Academy can provide airport and hotel suggestions to assist with these details. Attendees should contact the Academy prior to arrival for the latest Covid precautions and protocols.
